Obituaries

Ursula Wagner ( - 3 Nov 2021) . We deeply regret to inform our Andean archaeology colleagues of the recent passing of the internationally renowned archaeometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy specialist, Dr. Ursula ("Ursel") Wagner. She was trained as a chemist and did her Diploma and Ph.D. theses at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany. She also completed post-doctorate research under Garman Harbottle at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Along with her husband, Friedrich ("Fritz") Wagner, Professor of Physics at the TUM Physics Department, much of her long and highly productive career was devoted to the application and promotion of Mössbauer spectroscopy, particularly in illuminating the characteristics and technologies of ancient ceramics and metals and their roles in the Central Andes (Montegrande, Chavín, Sicán, Chimú, and Inca) and Central Europe (Celtic). Her archaeometric study of the ceramics found inside the Galerías de Ofrendas at Chavín de Huántar confirmed that they were produced at diverse locations in Peru and brought to the site. Similarly, her comprehensive analysis was critical in unlocking the secret of Sicán blackware production. While her devotion to Mössbauer spectroscopy was widely known, she passionately advocated interdisciplinary collaboration. More importantly, she practiced it until late in her career. Together with Fritz, she led the Munich Archaeometry Group. She eagerly participated in archaeological fieldwork to firmly grasp the physical and cultural contexts of the objects and material she analyzed and collected samples in close consultation with archaeologists to maximize the depth and breadth of information to be gained. She also advocated and practiced a stepwise and multi-technique approach to archaeometric problems. Thus Mössbauer spectroscopy was commonly combined with neutron activation analysis, X-ray diffraction, thin-section microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray radiography. To investigate the production technology of ancient ceramics, laboratory and field experiments also formed an integral methodological component. She was truly a model scientist and an ideal collaborator - cautious, empirically rigorous, systematic, intellectually curious, constantly seeking to refine her understanding of issues at hand through many question-answer sessions, and very generous with her time and knowledge. She will be greatly missed in the profession and by those who knew and worked with her.

Jürgen Golte (09/03/1943 Gdansk - 07/29/2021 Lima) . Jürgen Golte held the chair of Anthropology of the Americas at the Institute for Latin American Studies from 1980 to 2009. During this nearly three-decade tenure at the Freie Universität Berlin, he shaped teaching and research on the Americas as well as the regional focus on the Andean Area by innovatively and consistently applying a perspective of long historical duration, spanning the pre-colonial period to the present. His internationally acclaimed research addresses the economic and social history of Peru's peasants from the time of the Inca state to the present, the "andinization" of Peru's capital in the wake of 20th-century migration from the highlands, and the iconography of pre-Inca Moche, Nazca, and Tiahuanaco cultures; he has pioneeringly examined collections housed at the Ethnological Museum Berlin and the National Museum of Anthropology, Archaeology and History in Lima. Jürgen Golte studied Anthropology of the Americas in Bonn, Lima and Berlin, among others with Herrmann Trimborn, John Murra, José Matos Mar and Gerdt Kutscher; under Jürgen Golte, in turn, numerous Ancient Americanists earned their doctorates and habilitations (advanced post-doctoral studies), who today work at universities and research institutions in Germany and Peru. During his studies he had already built an academic bridge between Europe and the countries of the Andean region. His long-standing cooperation with the Universidad Nacional de San Marcos in Lima, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2011, as well as with the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos internationalized German Latin American research. To this day, this forms a basis of close binational cooperation and joint research projects. In recent years, as a public intellectual, he has continued to generate lively and fruitful debates not only within the discipline, but also among a broad Spanish-speaking public, among other contributions, with the new edition of his ethnohistorical study on the Túpac Amaru II rebellion and ethnological field research (together with Doris León) on "Aymara liberalism." We remember Jürgen Golte at the Institute for Latin American Studies because of this rich academic work and the friendly exchange in our daily work. For this we remain attached to him as a colleague and friend with great gratitude and will honor his memory. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

Julie Jones (August 26th, 1935 - June 22nd, 2021) .The Trustees and staff of The Metropolitan Museum of Art mourn the passing of Julie Jones, Curator Emerita and preeminent scholar of Precolumbian art. Julie was a beloved member of the staff for 38 years, serving 21 years as the head of the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, including six years as Andrall E. Pearson Curator in Charge. She began her career at the Museum of Primitive Art, and after that museum’s collection was gifted to The Met, she became Curator of Precolumbian art in the newly-established Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Julie’s leadership and scholarship were integral to the success of the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing from its founding until her retirement in 2013. She organized a number of exhibitions at the Museum of Primitive Art and at the Met showcasing the art of the ancient Andes, beginning with “Art of Empire: The Inca of Peru” (1964), and “Desert Valley: Early Works from Ica, Peru” (1983) and continuing on through “Andean Four-Cornered Hats” (1990) and “Ancient Peruvian Mantles” (1995). Julie’s passion and dedication for her field of study – and her ever-lively personality – were treasured by all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed. Billie Jean Isbell (1937 - June 26, 2021) . With a heavy heart I write with news that Billie Jean Isbell passed away on June 26 in Casa Real Nursing Home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her son Cid was with her. She was 84. Professor Emerita at Cornell University, Billie Jean Isbell was a consummate ethnographer and preeminent figure in Andean studies. Her book To Defend Ourselves: Ecology and Ritual in an Andean Village – a study of ritual life, kinship, sociopolitical organization, urban migration and political conflict in the community of Chuschi, Peru – has become a classic of Andeanist literature. Her work on Andean gender identity – which, she argued, goes through a series of transformations throughout the life cycle – placed traditional studies of Andean gender complementarity in a new, more sophisticated framework. Deeply affected by the devastation visited on Chuschi during the Shining Path insurgency, she worked extensively with human rights organizations and victim associations to record the testimonials of refugees from the war. Her novel Finding Cholita, a fictionalized ethnography exploring the long-term effects of chronic violence in the Ayacucho region, was awarded honorable mention for the Victor Turner prize from the Society for Humanistic Anthropology in 2009. Billie Jean possessed tremendous joie de vivre which enabled her to surmount childhood poverty and lifelong ill health with grace and good humor. She lived life expansively with style and a great sense of fun. Her friends will long cherish memories of her spectacular garden, delicious cooking and evenings spent deep in conversation.

Pieter Muysken (1950-2021) . We deeply mourn the loss of our esteemed friend and colleague Pieter Muysken, who passed away the night of April 6, 2021 after a months-long battle with an aggressive, incurable form of cancer. Pieter Muysken was born in 1950 in Oruro, in the highlands of Bolivia. The altitude of Oruro, at over 3,700 meters, symbolizes for us his elevatedly profound and many-leveled contribution to linguistics. He contributed to fields as diverse as generative grammar, theoretical morphology, South American Indigenous languages, historical linguistics, codeswitching, areal linguistics, language description, minority languages, typology and, of course, the study of pidgins, creoles, and mixed languages. Having learned Spanish, Quechua and Dutch as a child, he added a significant number of other languages to his repertoire of spoken languages, including Papiamentu. He was instrumental in the establishment of at least two journals devoted to creolistics: Amsterdam Creole Studies in the 1970s and the Journal of Pidgin and Creole Languages in the 1980s. His work in the realm of pidgins and creoles was groundbreaking in several areas: the study of creole languages from a generative perspective, the syntax of Papiamentu, the study of older texts in the Dutch creole from the Virgin Islands and the languages of Suriname, the establishment of the existence of mixed languages through his work on the mixed Quechua-Spanish language Media Lengua, and its embedding in a model of language contact in general. His productivity as a scholar was exceptional, with a book every year or two, and hundreds of articles, generating fresh ideas and insights up to just weeks before the diagnosis. Through the (co-)organization of numerous workshops and conferences in Amsterdam, Leiden, Nijmegen (the three places where he worked as a professor) and elsewhere, he brought many people together, leading to all forms of collaboration. At the 1986 conference on substrates versus universals in Amsterdam, he and his colleagues laid the groundwork for the creation of the Society of Pidgin and Creole Linguistics and the Journal of Pidgin and Creole Languages. His energy and ability to obtain grants—probably more than anyone else in his home country—supported many dozens of young linguists who were able to pursue their dreams thanks to his helping hand. And he may be the only person who at a conference on language contact could boast of having supervised the PhD dissertations of all but one of the conference participants. As a human being, he was universally well liked, incredibly warm, and diplomatic yet honest. He was exceptionally generous with his knowledge, with his local and global networks, and with his time and his humanity, always ready to help others. Hundreds of linguists the world over continue to develop the intellectual and human legacy he created. The world of creolistics, contact linguistics, and the world at large, have lost one of their exemplary human beings and scholars.

Jeffrey R. Parsons (1940 - March 19, 2021) . Jeff Parsons died last night at the University of Michigan hospital. He was first diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and then found to have cardiac issues. His wife, Mary, was with him. He was an unusually kind colleague and a fine scholar.

Jeffrey Parson’s contributions to Andean archaeology reached far and wide and profoundly affected a great many Andeanists of all backgrounds. For many, it was his warm, interpersonal relationships for which he will be best remembered. He himself would probably most wish to be remembered for his efforts to establish systematic settlement pattern studies as an integral component of broader research programs, as demonstrated by his work in the Department of Junín, Peru. This was by design a two-year project co-directed with Ramiro Matos in a collaborative effort between The University of Michigan and the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, carried out between 1975 and 1976. The idea of studying changes in settlement patterns through time was already known in Peru, but Jeff was adamant that the field work underpinning such studies should be systematic. Along with Bill Sanders, Jeff had developed a methodology of ground-level systematic coverage that worked well in the Valley of Mexico, and he was eager to apply this kind of fieldwork to the Central Andes. The plan developed by Jeff and Ramiro was to do so in three very distinct settings in the central Sierra: the steep, ridge-and-valley terrain of Tarma, the high, grassy Puna of the Junín plateau, and the broad, more densely settled Mantaro Valley. A few weeks into the project Jeff realized that much of this methodology would have to be adapted to special challenges, but almost as quickly it became clear that these efforts would generate a settlement data base unlike anything yet achieved in the Andes. The final report on this project, a four-volume monograph in two parts, was a long time coming but is a fitting testament to his commitment. Meanwhile, a number of dissertations were spawned by this pioneering work, and the value of data-based settlement pattern research became ever more widely accepted and valued across international borders and throughout the discipline. For Jeff, ever the self-described Mesoamericanist, this was no mean achievement, and one for which he should deservedly have been proud.

Alina Wong ( - January 15, 2021) .It´s with deep sadness that I have to communicate the pass away of Alina Wong, an IFEA archaeologist, from a disease derived from sars-cov-2 yesterday, January 15, 2021. Alina graduated in San Marcos University, Lima, and was from the very begin of her career attached to the French projects on Central Highland´s Peru conducted by Elizabeth Bonnier and Daniele Lavallee. She specialized in Late-Intermediate pottery and further in bioarcheology. She also worked for the EPAF (Forensic Anthropology Peruvian Team) in Peru and overseas. Everyone who dropped by the IFEA Library in Lima could probably remember her kind welcome and ability to find papers and provide solutions to any query in bibliography. We all will miss Alina.

John P. Protzen (1934- January 10, 2021) It deeply saddens me to report that Jean-Pierre Protzen, Professor Emeritus of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley died in Switzerland on Sunday, January 10, 2021. His beloved wife and companion Elsbeth had passed on a few days before. While his death was attributed to Covid-19, it was surely hastened by a broken heart. Jean-Pierre made enormous contributions to Andean archaeology, especially in his studies of stone and adobe architecture in the Inca sites of Sacsayhuaman, Ollantaytambo, and Tambo Colorado, as well as at Tiahuanaco. His understanding of quarrying and construction led to both detailed and broad conclusions about the general nature of these sites and the cultures that produced them. He was Chair of the College of Environmental Design as an architect with particular interests in the logic of design, and in mid-career became fascinated with the architecture of powerful Andean states, particularly monumental works in stone. His studies provide the basis for understanding the stone-fitting techniques of the Inca and Tiahuanaco builders, a field previously plagued by speculation. He was long a Director of the Institute of Andean Studies, and he served as Vice President, then President, for twelve years, providing much-appreciated, thoughtful leadership to his colleagues, together with Elsbeth, who was Treasurer for a decade. Those of us privileged with his presence in our own field investigations found our understanding of our architectural issues illuminated by his logical, insightful perceptions and uplifted by his friendship. He will be greatly and broadly missed.

His work on colonial ritual drinking vessels (keros) and mystical tourism were also major contributions to the field. He was an influential professor at the University of Cusco (UNSAAC) and served as the Rector of this institution. He also served as director of the Museo Inka and Cuzco's office of the National Institute of Culture. Paul Ossa (September 22, 1943 - May 31, 2020) . best known to most of us for his work at La Cumbre, a Paleoindian site in the Moche Valley in the 1970s, died May 31, 2020, in Berkeley, CA. Paul had a very mixed career, although he always focused on early human cultures. A native of Chile, he immigrated to the United States with his family at age 10. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and then spent 2 years at Cambridge University on a fellowship. While at Cambridge he spent a number of vacations in Bordeaux with François Bordes’ group, although he never joined a formal program there. He then got his PhD. at Harvard, working in Peru on the Chanchan-Moche Valley Project, which culminated in his dissertation in 1973 (“La Cumbre. A Survey of the Lithic Preceramic Occupation of the Moche Valley, North Coastal Peru, Harvard University, 1973), although the gist of his research was published in an article in 1971 in Ñawpa Pacha. The South American Paleoindian period was just beginning to attract serious attention and Paul brought to it expertise and knowledge of the advances in study and classification of lithic technologies that had been developed in France.
As a young PhD. Paul taught a few years at Skidmore and then briefly at the University of Montana before going to La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. Most of his active career was spent in Australia, where he worked at a number of Paleolithic sites in that country (these are listed on or available on Google) . He returned to Chile on a sabbatical, however, and carried out excavations on Isla Navarino, in the far south, material which has never been published. . He returned to the US, living in Berkeley with his wife Jane Reece, the well-known scientific textbook author, and formed an official archaeological company, joining the Registry of Professional Archaeologists so as to be able to work in the US. Although his career in Peru was relatively short and early in his career, he retained his strong interest in Paleoindian studies, especially in the Magellanic region as well as in stone tool manufacture and use in general. Paul was known to many of his friends as not just a nice guy, but a very learned and thoughtful archaeologist with interesting ideas ranging widely geographically and theoretically, and with a great hat collection too! He will be greatly missed.

Robert L. Carneiro (1927-2020) . Bob Carneiro died peacefully on the morning of June 24, listening to Beethoven with his son, Brett.
He received his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1957 and for 52 years served as Curator of South American Ethnology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He was the principal curator of the museum’s Hall of South American Peoples.
Bob Carneiro was a towering figure in anthropology, known for his precise and solidly scientific contributions to the specifics of South American ethnology situated within explicitly evolutionary theories of cultural complexity. His initial fieldwork was among the Kuikuru of Brazil where he demonstrated that the population of a single Kuikuru village could grow many times its present capacity without depleting resurces. The implications were far-reaching and revolutionized today’s understandings of carrying capacity, population dynamics and sociopolitical formations of neotropical horticultural societies. In subsequent fieldwork, Carneiro found the Amahuaca of Peru to be far simpler than the Kuikuru, leading him to develop a focus on the evolutionary formation of societies.
With a unique humanity, Carneiro inspired three generations of anthropologists to prosecute harder-core science, and yet many remember him today as the nicest man they ever met.

Colin McEwan (1951 - March 28, 2020) .Colin McEwan passed away Saturday morning, March 28th, after a year-long battle with leukemia. His wife Norma Rosso was with him when he left us to join the Pachamama. Born in Scotland in 1951, but raised in New Zealand, he became a citizen of the world at an early age when he embarked on a continuous journey of exploration and discovery. Colin was always driven and on a perpetual search for deeper meaning and truth in all he examined. His professional life took him throughout Latin America and to positions in London and the United States. Colin loved and enjoyed life fully and his work passionately. He fought his illness to the very end and continued to write contributions for his publication projects into March of this year. Colin is survived by his wife Norma, his sister Margaret, and his father Robin McEwan.
We ask those who knew him to honor him in their own way for now. Due to the existing coronavirus pandemic, plans for a memorial must be postponed until a later date.
Colin McEwan’s personal research explored alternate ontologies, and reconstruction and interpretation of the roles that objects play in prehistoric cultural landscapes. He received his PhD in Anthropology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2004. He carried out fieldwork in diverse settings including the Andean Highlands of Peru, Colombian Amazonas, coastal and insular Ecuador, and Patagonia. From 1979-1991 he directed the Agua Blanca Archaeological Project focused on the principal town of the Manteño Señorio of Salangome in the Machalilla National Park, coastal Ecuador. He was formerly head of the Americas Section at the British Museum, London where he curated exhibitions and authored or co-edited publications including Ancient Mexico in the British Museum (1994); Patagonia: Natural History, Prehistory and Ethnography at the Uttermost End of the Earth (1997); Pre-Columbian Gold: Technology, Style and Iconography (2000); Unknown Amazon: Culture in Nature in Ancient Brazil (2001); Turquoise Mosaics from Mexico (2006); El Caribe Pre-Colombino (2008); Ancient American Art in Detail (2009); Moctezuma: Aztec Ruler (2009); Turquoise in Mexico and North America (2012); and Inca Sacred Space: Landscape, Site and Symbol in the Andes (2014). From 2012-2019 he was Director of Pre-Columbian Studies at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, Washington, D.C. He was most recently working to complete (with Bryan Cockrell and John Hoopes) a co-edited catalogue of the Bliss Collection of Pre-Columbian Art from Central America and Colombia together with an accompanying scholarly volume. A second co-edited volume in preparation (with Christopher Beekman) reexamines the evidence for Pacific Coastal Contacts from Mexico through Ecuador.

John Cohen (1932-2019) . I am sad to report the passing of John Cohen, perhaps best known for his recording and photography of numerous musicians from Appalachia as well as the New York art and music scene of the late 1950s and early 1960s. In addition he was part of the performing group, the New Lost City Ramblers (recordings issued by Smithsonian Folkways). He also taught visual arts at SUNY, Purchase, between 1972 and 1997.
For Andeanists, however, he is important for his work in recording the weaving and music of Peru’s contemporary indigenous peoples. He received an MFA in art under Josef Albers at Yale, whose wife Anni was a renowned weaver with Bauhaus training who appreciated pre-Hispanic Peruvian textiles, as many weavers do. He was amazed by the fabulous Paracas textiles on view at the Brooklyn Museum. In his search for more information about the textiles, he visited Junius Bird at the American Museum of Natural History. Junius supported the idea that since the Paracas artists were long gone, he should ask his questions of living weavers in Peru. Junius also helped arrange funding for John’s 6-month trip to Peru in 1957, and commissioned him to collect textiles for the Museum. He also gave John tips on whom to ask for advice about where to go and on what type of information to record. This was many years before anyone else had thought to record such material.
John’s Spanish was limited but he was nothing if not enterprising, and his thesis is full of detailed information on looms and weaving from many of the regions of highland Peru and the north coast, where these techniques still survived. He later made additional trips to Peru, to do photography and record the music, as well as making several beautiful films, featuring both the textiles and the music. His deep respect for Andean people and for their traditions shines through all his work. The music and the films as well as many of his photographs of Peru are featured in his Past Present Peru (Steidl 2010), which includes two books (one focusing on textiles), three music CDs, and five DVDs (the films). He had a particular appreciation for the community of Q’ero (or Q’eros) which until recently could not be reached by any vehicular road, and he made a number of trips there, appreciating both the weaving and the music, which was relatively uncontaminated by Spanish influences. After he gave his own textile collection to The Textile Museum, in Washington, DC, where I was working, I decided to feature it in an exhibition, and together we wrote the catalogue, Hidden Threads of Peru (Merrell in association with The Textile Museum, 2002). He was a pleasure to work with, based on our mutual respect. In addition, some of his Peruvian photographs were featured in Elena Phipps’ exhibition and catalogue, The Peruvian Four-Selvaged Cloth (Fowler Museum at UCLA, 2013). John never pretended to be an expert on weaving, but he knew enough to record it, lovingly, and that led him to a lifelong interest in Peru.
He was active until the end, and in addition to continuing to make music, he devoted himself in recent years to publishing his photographs, and archiving his work at the Library of Congress, a model for all of us. His was a life well lived.

Bernard White Bell, Jr. (11/11/1948 - 08/07/2019) . Dr. Bernard Bell was killed Thursday morning in an auto accident en route from Denver to Cortez, Colorado. He had a PhD in optical science and had specialized in lasers prior to his retirement a few years ago, whereupon he pursued his longtime interest in archaeoastronomy. Like me, he had a special interest in Vilcabamba and we shared many expeditions over the years. Much of his work there centered on alignments and shadow casting among the many enigmatically carved stones at Vitcos and nearby Ñusta Ispanan. His work determined the purpose of the remote but closely related Punkuyoc complex, showing that observances from the near perfectly-preserved Inkahuasi there marked both solstices and the equinox passage, establishing the structure as the only surviving Inka “observatory” yet identified. He and I together found two rare, surviving skyline pylons bracketing the Inti Raymi sunrise and he discovered that the Capac Raymi sunrise shines directly through the building’s centerline via its doorways and an aligned interior window. He was working on possible lunar and stellar observations from the site during a trip there we shared there just this June. He was a member of the Institute of Andean Studies at Berkeley and the Society for Cultural Astronomy in the American Southwest. We go way back. I miss him.

Dennis Stanford ( ). Sadly, Dennis Stanford, Curator of First Americans collections at the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution, passed away yesterday morning. Dennis was a strong supporter of early people and other research in Latin America, having visited and/or worked with several colleagues in several countries, including Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina. Perhaps, above all, over the past forty-five years he helped many Latin American scholars to obtain research grants and fellowships from the National Geographic Society and the Smithsonian. In addition, Dennis carried out numerous research projects in Alaska, various areas of the United States, and western Europe. In recent years, he (and his co-author Bruce Bradley) is perhaps best known for his Solutrean model of the peopling of the western coast of the United States. He will be missed for his experience, insight, good humor, and friendship.

Ann Kendall (1/6/ - 2/23/2019).Ann completed an MA in Interdisciplinary Archaeology in 1970 at the University of California, Los Angeles and then studied for her PhD at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London with Prof. Warwick Bray, culminating in an influential thesis on Inca Architecture. In 1977 she established the Cusichaca Archaeological Project which became one of the largest multi-disciplinary projects in the Peruvian Andes. The Cusichaca Archaeological Project provided a formative experience for many who have gone on to lead commercial archaeology, research and heritage work in Peru, the UK, USA and beyond. Ann continued to work in Peru, through sometimes turbulent periods, for over 40 years establishing and directing the Cusichaca Trust. With Ann’s enthusiasm and guidance, the Cusichaca Trust undertook archaeology, ecology, ethnography and rural development work with innovative forms of community engagement. Rural development work became the main focus of the Cusichaca Trust which continued an inspirational range of activities particularly focusing on the investigation and rehabilitation of ancient agricultural systems. This work benefited from, and contributed to, many communities in Peru (particularly in the areas around the departments of Cuzco, Apurimac and Ayacucho). Ann was most proud and passionate about her rural development initiatives and she published about these as well as her archaeological research. The Cusichaca Archive, incorporating the papers, photographs, plans etc. from the work of both the Cusichaca Archaeological Project and the Cusichaca Trust, is now being catalogued and made accessible through the Senate House Library, University of London where it will be available for future researchers. Ann was an Honorary Research Associate of the UCL Institute of Archaeology; was awarded the Order of Merit by the Peruvian Government in 1980 and in 1994 received an O.B.E. for her contribution to overseas development work. In recent years Ann was living in Spain with developing dementia, supported by her son Paul.
Ann was a vital force who brought people together and, through her own enthusiasm and commitment, persuaded them to contribute to her unique combination of archaeological research and development work. She’d like us to raise a glass (or two), have a dance, and then get back to work.
